Book Review: Reach For The Skai by Skai Jackson

Hey everyone! Today is day 24 of Blogtober and I have a review for you! This review will be a bit shorter, but it still tells you everything you need to know about why I loved this book and my thoughts on it!

Girls Life Magazine (who you may remember me working with for the Beach Blanket Book Club) reached out to me to see if I wanted to read Skai’s book Reach For The Skai: How To Inspire, Empower and Clapback and do a spotlight post on it, and how could I say no? I was a 2000’s Disney kid which means I grew up on The Suit Life of Zach and Cody, Hannah Montana, and Wizards of Waverly Place; but I also loved the newer shows such as Good Luck Charlie, the Suit Life reboot Suit Life on Deck, and Jessie, where Skai Jackson got her jump start into her acting career.

Below is a bit about the book, the author, and where you can find Skai and my review! If you head to my Instagram, you can check out my spotlight post for this book as well!

Reach for the Skai: How to Inspire, Empower, and Clapback

Reach For The Skai: How To Inspire, Empower and Clapback by Skai Jackson, Published October 1st, 2019 by Crown Books For young Readers. Recommended reading age is 8+

Official Synopsis:

Actress and activist Skai Jackson shares her lessons on life and her rise to stardom in this vibrant memoir about self-acceptance, girl empowerment, and the classy clapback.

Actress and activist Skai Jackson is a star! Her rise to fame started on the popular Disney Channel shows Bunk’d and Jessie. Her cool sense of style led her to create her own fashion line. And her success has made her a major influencer, with millions of followers on Instagram, who isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes in.

But being a teen celebrity isn’t always glamorous. For the first time, Skai discusses the negative experiences that sometimes come with living in the spotlight–the insecurities about her appearance, the challenges of separating her real personality from her TV roles, and the bullying she’s faced both personally and professionally. She knows firsthand the struggles tweens and teens face today, and she has found her calling as an antibullying activist, known as the queen of the classy clapback.

Skai is a positive force and a role model for inspiring change and embracing differences in others. Her story will encourage girls and boys alike to believe in themselves and to have the courage to reach for the sky and follow their dreams.

Skai Jackson is an actress and activist best known for her roles on Disney Channel’s Bunk’d and Jessie. She was named to the Hollywood Reporter’s Top 30 Stars Under Age 18 list, Variety’s Young Hollywood Impact Report, and Time’s 30 Most Influential Teens of the Year list, and was nominated for a NAACP Image Award. She’s also been featured in The Cut, Teen Vogue, and Ebony, among many others. She lives in Los Angeles.

This was a really awesome book. To see the behind the scenes life for a child actor, to really get to know Skai for who she is and learn about her values and morals in life, and get some good tips, this was a fantastic book. I hope tons of young girls and boys have a chance to read this book.

It was fun to read about her time on Jessie, as I grew up watching that show, reading about her other roles she booked, and other extracurricular activities such as her Nowadays fashion line, her activism accomplishments and so much more!

Skai is a very talented young woman and a great role model for kids young and old, and I can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next!

Thank you very much to Girls Life for sending me a copy of Skai’s book! I am very greatful for it ❤ I probably won’t be reading it again, so does anyone have a good idea on who I should donate it to? I’d love for it to get to a young girl who could use a role model like Skai in her life! If you do know, let me know! You can reach me through the contact form on my blog or at somebooksandramblings@gmail.com

Regardless of age though, if you watched Jessie, you should read this book. It was as the title says- inspiring and empowering!

  1. I never knew that Skai Jackson published a book. I was also raised in the 2000’s so I got to watch some of the old disney shows and movies. I kinda seen some of the new stuff, but they’re okay but I seriously love Jessie though

    1. If you loved Jessie, definitely check this one out! I was a bit disappointed she didn’t have anything to say on Cameron Boyce but she had written it before he passed so that’s understandable.

      1. That’s really understandable. I feel like it still bites that Cameron Boyce died especially since he did die so young and was such an optimistic person in general, and his movies were awesome.
