Blogtober: Halloween Candy Book Tag

Welcome back to Blogtober! Today, day 22, I will be sharing a book tag I made based on the question “What if Halloween candy were books?” I decided to make it into a tag and I tried to think of all different sorts of candy so there would be variation! Let’s begin!

Kit-Kat: A book you wanted to read all at once

Ruthless Gods by Emily Duncan. I’ sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I requested an E-ARC of the sequel to Wicked Saints on Netgalley and was denied. But because I wished for it, I was randomly granted access to read the book! Thank you, Netgalley gods!

But then I didn’t read it for a month. I wanted to read it so bad, but I didn’t want to have to put it down halfway through or only read it in pieces. I wanted to read it in one sitting. So finally, this past week, I had a day off (which is why I’m so backed up on Blogtober posts, in case you were wondering) and spent the day reading Ruthless Gods. I hope to have a review up sometime this winter!

Candy Corn: A book that everyone either loves or hates. Answer depending on if you like Candy Corn or not! (E.X if you hate it, name a book you hate that everyone loves)

I enjoy candy corn, so I’ll be picking a book I loved that a lot of people don’t like. For me, that book is There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins. I think a lot of people were disappointed because they had been fans of her contemporary romance trilogy with Anna, Lola, and Isla, and weren’t ready to read a horror novel from her. Another thing I’ve see a lot of people upset about was the fact that they felt there was too much romance in the book, which is proof that irony is real. I guess I happen to fall perfectly in the middle because I enjoyed her romance trilogy, but I also loved this book (even more than the trilogy) and I thought the romance was great. It was half the reason I enjoyed the book so much!

MnM’s: A series with a LOT of books (6+)

I feel it would be cheating to put Percy Jackson down because The Olympians and Heroes of Olympus are two separate series, even if they don’t read like it. So I’m going to say The Lunar Chronicles. You have Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Winter, Fairest, and Stars Above which makes 6 books!

Also, these books are so good? A female lead cast, diverse characters, amazing plot, heartwarming romances and have I mentioned that each book is a loose retelling of a fairy tale? Cinder is Cinderella, Scarlet is Little Red Riding Hood, Cress is Rapunzel, Winter is Snow White and Fairest is Snow White’s Evil Queen!

Sweet Tarts: A series that has good books (sweet) and bad books (tart)

For this, I’m picking Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series. There were some books I really enjoyed (City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Fallen Angles, City of Heavenly Fire) and others that I really didn’t enjoy very much (City of Glass, City of Lost Souls). I want to do a reread at some point and I will try to review the books and see if my opinions change after reading, but that’s where my thoughts stand as of now. I’ve only ever read City of Lost Souls once before, so I’m eager to see if my opinion on the book has changed!

Reeses: A book with two separate tropes/genres that work well together

The two tropes that work well together are Chosen One and Enemies to Lovers, like you see in Sarah J. Maas’ series’ Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses! In Throne of Glass, you have the chosen one (Aelin) and the enemies to loves, actually a few times, (Dorian, because he technically imprisoned her, Rowan, because of Heir of Fire) and in ACOTAR you have the chosen one to break the curse (Feyre) and enemies to loves twice (Tamlin and Rhysand). Come to think of it, she’s really good at writing those! I can’t wait to see what Crescent City has in store for us!

Bonus: another book that fits those tropes is Brigid Kemmerer’s A Curse So Dark And Lonely series! You have the chosen one to break the curse (Harper) and the enemies to lovers romance (with Rhen). It would appear that I really enjoy this combo. If you have any recs, send them my way!

Sour Patch Kids: A book that was good but that you didn’t like

Marie Lu’s The Young Elites trilogy was fantastically written, but I just did not like it. It was the first villain POV story I’d ever read, and I wasn’t expecting it. I don’t often sympathize with the villain and I couldn’t do it for this trilogy either. The writing was good, but to me, the plot was meh and the characters were, obviously, kinda evil. The last book was my favorite I think and it actually made me cry at the end so kudos to Marie for that one.

Lolly Pops: A book best enjoyed if you take it slow

I have to pick Priory of The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. This book is M A S S I V E, and I feel like I will need to read slowly in order to ensure I’m actually understanding the information and connecting with the story rather than zipping through it.
